About 9 Round

9Round began with the wish to make a difference in people’s lives. Shannon “The Cannon” Hudson, the IKF Light Middleweight Kickboxing World Champion, and his wife Heather had a dream. They wanted to create a place where people who were pulled in a million directions could go to get a killer exercise without having to plan their entire lives around making class time or spending hours at the gym. Shannon’s martial arts and kickboxing training, as well as Heather’s passion for fitness, served as the basis for the 9Round Franchising empire. Shannon Hudson discovered that there was no place where the average person could be exposed to the “top secret” training of some of the world’s best fighters after more than 70 fights inside the ring. That’s where the idea for 9Round’s HIIT exercise came from. He knew that if he could take his grueling ring workouts and turn them into a non-intimidating, flexible circuit training workout format, the average person could reap the benefits of boxing and kickboxing without getting struck. The economy had taken a turn for the worse in 2008. The Hudsons were taking a risk by starting a new company with two young children and a karate school. However, they had big plans and even bigger dreams to assist people change their lives. When developing the 9Round concept, they knew that keeping the kickboxing exercise brief but effective was critical. The business was founded on the premise that people do not need to spend more time in the gym — they simply need to focus and exercise more intensely. The Hudsons thought that through fitness, anyone could discover their inner hero and show up in life ready to face their battles with courage. The first 9Round location debuted on Butler Road in Greenville, SC in July 2008. This location served as both a testing and proving ground for the 30-minute kickboxing circuit training workout idea. Shannon and Heather, as the only two team members, individually implemented, tested, and revised every process and piece of equipment, from the gloves and heavy bags that would be used to pad exercises. The first 9Round franchise was sold to a studio member after only one year in that first site, albeit a very grueling and unpredictable one. The business had grown to 100 locations by 2012. As the brand grew, it became recognized as a place where you could fit in a high-intensity workout. Shannon and Heather continued to concentrate on improving, refining, and scaling processes to pass on to franchisees as the business grew. Their conviction that everyone deserves accessible world-championship-quality training was the driving factor behind the brand’s continued growth. The Hudsons were not only transforming the lives of thousands of 9Round members but also of every franchisee who joined the 9Round system by assisting them in owning their businesses. They established a solid Home Office with an expanding staff that innovates and supports franchisees. After its humble beginnings in Greenville, SC, the 9Round brand has expanded throughout the globe, with nearly 700 locations in 17 countries and many more in various stages of development. In 2020, 9Round will extend its offerings to include on-demand workouts that can be completed at any time and from any location. With new workouts released every week, members can supplement their time in the classroom without having to bring equipment from home. It’s just another way 9Round is evolving to help people change their lives while keeping their routines intact. Every boutique fitness studio at 9Round delivers on the promise of providing people with the physical and emotional strength they require to live better lives and face daily challenges. Shannon “The Cannon” Hudson, the founder and CEO of 9Round Franchising LLC, claimed the Light Middleweight Kickboxing Championship of the World by TKO in the sixth round on October 1, 2011. He received his training from renowned boxing trainer Xavier Biggs, the brother of 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist Tyrell Biggs. Shannon started martial arts training at the age of seven and has continued to train throughout her adult life. He holds a 5th-degree black belt in Japanese Shotokan Karate, a 4th-degree black belt in Joe Lewis’ Fighting System, and a 3rd-degree black belt in Bill Wallace Superfoot. Shannon is completely involved in the business’s day-to-day operations and is continuously striving to provide the best support to 9Round franchisees and the best workout experience to 9Round members. In early 2016, he published Zero to 100, a business book that is a candid memoir of the journey from one 9Round site to the first 100 locations. Shannon became an Amazon best-selling author as a result of this work. Shannon likes developing the 9Round brand, giving public speeches, and inspiring others by thinking outside the box. Heather “The Hero” Hudson has been the COO and Co-Founder of 9Round since its start in 2008. She is a Shotokan Karate black belt who grew up with a love of fitness and general wellness. She had always been active and loved fitness, but after having two children, she realized she needed more from her exercise program. Heather fell in love with kickboxing for fitness and used 9Round to elevate her fitness to the next level. Her new passion is assisting others in realizing that their fitness objectives are never too lofty. Her favorite aspect of the 9Round Fitness program is the ability to help both beginners and advanced fitness levels in a motivating, uplifting group exercise setting. Her desire to assist others does not end in the classroom. Heather is also committed to assisting 9Round franchisees in meeting their business objectives. Heather assists the franchising business by focusing on owner communications, marketing, and the development of scalable systems for 9Round owners. She sets high standards for herself and the 9Round business, and she assists franchisees at all levels. Heather particularly enjoys guiding women through their fitness and business journeys, and she hopes to write a book about her views on these subjects shortly.
