Based in Los Angeles, California, FreedomPop is a provider of mobile virtual networks and cellular Internet. The business offers mobile phones, tablets, and broadband devices for use with their service in addition to offering “free” IP mobile services, including free data, text, and VoIP. Steven Sesar and Stephen Stokols, the CEO and co-founder, founded it. STS Media Inc. owned and ran it until June 2019, when it was effectively sold. T-Mobile and AT&T networks in the US, Three in the UK, Yoigo in Spain, and Telcel in Mexico are all utilized by FreedomPop.
In 2011, Stephen Stokols, the CEO, and Steven Sesar co-founded FreedomPop. Stokols was the CEO of Woo Media, a video chat and entertainment company before he started FreedomPop. After forming a collaboration with LightSquared in December 2011, FreedomPop terminated it when LightSquared was denied permission from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to expand its network. In October 2012, FreedomPop started offering 4G-only routers for sale. Utilizing the 4G network of Clearwire, the business started providing cellular and mobile internet services in the country. In December 2012, 20% of FreedomPop’s free consumers became paying customers.
The first round of financing for FreedomPop, led by Mangrove Capital and Doll Capital Management, totaled $7.5 million in July 2012. FreedomPop and Sprint teamed up in April 2013 to extend their service to include 3G and 4G on Sprint-compatible devices. In July 2013, Mangrove Capital and Doll Capital Management gave the business a Series A1 financing in which they contributed an extra $4.3 million. One year after the original debut of its wireless broadband service, FreedomPop introduced its beta-free mobile phone plan with voice, text, and data service in October 2013. FreedomPop introduced a bring-your-own-device program for Sprint-compatible phones in November.
In April 2014, FreedomPop started promoting and offering iPhones interoperable with Sprint. The business also made an iOS app available to customers in the US, providing voice, text, and voicemail services. In May 2014, a month later, FreedomPop started to support LTE Android devices. The business announced in July that it would shortly start selling SIM card-based plans in Belgium in collaboration with Dutch carrier KPN. Outside of the United States, FreedomPop does not offer the sale of mobile devices.
Starting with the iPad Mini and Samsung Tab 3, FreedomPop started providing its free 4G data, voice, and text plans to tablet customers in July 2014. Those who purchase a tablet through FreedomPop or another qualified bring-your-own-device (BYOD) Sprint device are eligible for the free data, voice, and text package. FreedomPop unveiled its own branded range of inexpensive smartphones and tablets in October 2014. The FreedomPop Liberty, a 7-inch tablet with Wi-Fi only and free phone and SMS text messaging was the first model to be made available.
FreedomPop’s GSMA customer base as well as its remaining retail company and brand name were sold to Red Pocket Mobile, according to an announcement made in June 2019. The deal’s complete details were not made public. FreedomPop informed some of its customers via email in July 2019 that it had switched their phone numbers to the MVNO Ting. The email read: “FreedomPop and UNREAL Mobile have made a deal to move all customers currently on the Sprint network to Ting Mobile, an industry-leading service provider on the Sprint Network.”
In June 2013, Time writer Jared Newman evaluated FreedomPop’s primary service. According to Newman, some service fees were not made explicit on the FreedomPop homepage. As a response to the criticism, FreedomPop began waiving the fee for active status for new members in July 2013.
FreedomPop’s service is intended for “light users,” but paid options come with unlimited talk and text as well as the opportunity to add high-speed data. After 1GB of data is consumed during a billing period, the “Unlimited Everything Plan,” which was introduced in May, switches from 4G LTE to 3G. This decreases to 256 kbits per second for users who registered before June 2015 or to 128 kbits per second for users who registered after June 2015 in June 2015. There are only a few places where the service is offered. Although Clark Howard says the call quality “can be an issue,” the carrier reportedly has excellent coverage.
In order to provide free international data usage in the United States and the United Kingdom, FreedomPop introduced a roaming SIM in January 2016 under the name “Global SIM”. The service is offered by Fogg Mobile, a global mobile connection service that utilizes AT&T and T-Mobile as roaming partners in the US. By the end of 2016, the business announced plans to extend roaming coverage to Southeast Asia and Latin America. Global SIM customers in the UK were notified by FreedomPop on October 17 that this service would end on October 20.
In order to offer refurbished smartphones for up to 80% less than the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, FreedomPop introduced FreedomShop in November 2016 in the United States, Great Britain, Mexico, and Spain. FreedomPop began slowing down users on July 2 if they didn’t pay for their new $4.99 Speed Boost Service. Users of premium plans were throttled to 5 Mbit/s, whereas users of free plans were limited to 1 Mbit/s. The Global or LTE SIM was unaffected by this throttling, which only applied to customers on the Sprint network.
FreedomPop reduced the additional data from Freedom Friends from 1000 MB to 500 MB on August 28, 2017. A user would receive a maximum of 500 MB per month from adding Freedom acquaintances, after which their acquaintances could share 500 MB of data with them. According to the new rule, users who have reached their 500 MB limit from adding Freedom Friends are no longer eligible to obtain additional data through data sharing. FreedomPop decreased the total additional data from Freedom Friends from 500 MB to 50 MB on July 10, 2018.
FreedomPop announced native cellular service on October 15, 2020, eliminating the need for the FreedomPop Messaging app for calling and messaging. Along with compatibility with popular financial apps and other mobile applications, FaceTime calls over cellular networks, unlimited iMessages, and RCS text messages are additional upgraded features. (WiFi only). Unlimited WiFi calling and texting are still included in the free service level, but cellular data usage is restricted to 25MB of LTE data and 10 minutes of audio calls and texts. The SIM card provided as of December 2020 needs iOS 8.2 or later or Android 4.3. Standard cell phones are not allowed.
