ADT, the grandfather of all home security companies, has been in operation in some shape or another for nearly 150 years. It is still one of the most well-known names on the market. However, ADT is competing in an ever-changing and modernizing industry. Traditional contract-based services like ADT are becoming relics of a bygone period, thanks to direct competitors like Comcast Xfinity and Vivint, as well as a slew of DIY home security systems, including innovative contenders like the Ring Alarm Pro. ADT Inc., formerly The ADT Corporation, is an American corporation that provides electronic security, fire protection, and other related alarm monitoring services to residential, small, and large businesses throughout the United States. The company headquarters are in Boca Raton, Florida. In a leveraged buyout, Apollo Global Management paid $6.9 billion for the business in February 2016. Tyco stated in January 2010 that it would acquire Broadview Security (formerly Brinks Home Security) and merge it with its ADT division in a $2.0 billion transaction. Brink’s spun off its home security business, which accounted for 15% of the company’s revenue that year, into a distinct publicly traded company in 2008. With a massive advertising effort, Brinks Home Security rebranded as Broadview Security in 2009. The advertisements were widely panned for being dishonest, fear-mongering, and exaggerating the capabilities of home security systems. Unflattering parodies of Broadview’s TV commercials were uploaded online, along with a filmed Saturday Night Live sketch starring Andy Samberg and Bill Hader, mocking the company’s efforts to manipulate consumers. Broadview was acquired by ADT in mid-2010, combining the #1 and #2 security businesses in North America, adding 1.3 million customer accounts and $565 million in annual recurring revenue to ADT’s existing customer base of 7.4 million accounts and $3 billion in annual revenue. Tyco stated in September 2011 that it would split into three companies, one of which would be ADT. ADT debuted as an independent public company on October 1, 2012, and started trading on the New York Stock Exchange. (NYSE: ADT). It purchased Reliance Protectron Security Services from Reliance Home Comfort in 2014. In February 2016, Apollo Global Management paid nearly $7 billion for ADT and combined it with another home security company, Protection 1. When combined with Protection 1, the purchase price represented a premium of approximately 56% over ADT’s closing share price on February 12, 2016, and reflected an aggregate transaction value of approximately $15 billion. Telus Corporation paid $700 million for all of ADT’s Canadian properties in October 2019. Telus had renamed ADT’s Canadian properties Telus SmartHome Security by September 2020. ADT announced an agreement in November 2021 to purchase Sunpro Solar, a residential rooftop solar power contractor, for $160 million in cash plus approximately 77.8 million shares of ADT common stock, for a total enterprise value of approximately $825 million. The business was renamed “ADT Solar” and operates as an ADT wholly-owned subsidiary. The business is working hard to rise to the occasion. ADT began integrating with Google Nest home automation products, including its smart cameras and Google Assistant-enabled Nest Hub smart displays, in 2020. ADT will begin installing and marketing Nest products in April 2021. Existing ADT customers can now use Google Assistant to manage their security systems via voice and touch control using a Nest Mini, Nest Hub, or Nest Hub Max. Perhaps most significantly, at CES 2023, ADT unveiled a new app that will enable customers to control all of their devices and settings from a single location. It enables ADT customers to manage all devices and settings from a single location rather than switching between the app, control panel, and online portal. The new ADT Plus app is now accessible to DIY customers and will be available to all clients with professionally installed systems by the end of 2023. Basic alarm tracking begins at $46 per month (compared to $30 per month for Vivint or Xfinity). Still, if you want to use the smart home automation and video storage mentioned earlier, you’ll have to pay $50 per month (the equivalent plan with video monitoring costs $45 per month at Vivint; Xfinity doesn’t charge extra for automation features and charges $40 per month to include video services). Furthermore, ADT needs contracts that range in length from 12 to 60 months depending on the region. Cancellation fees for these contracts are high: ADT can charge up to 75% of the contract’s remaining amount. According to the business, the contracts are in place to make purchasing the system more affordable for individuals in various financial situations. With all of the DIY choices on the market and the growing trend among professional security services to avoid contracts in favor of allowing customers to pay for hardware upfront or in installments, it’s surprising that ADT still requires them. Contracts are “standard practice in the industry,” according to ADT, but I’m aware of Vivint, Comcast Xfinity, and other professional home security companies that don’t require them.
