An American streaming television program called YouTube TV is run by YouTube, a fully-owned division of Google. Announced on February 28, 2017, the virtual multichannel video programming distributor offers a selection of live linear channel feeds and on-demand content from more than 100 television networks (including affiliates of the Big Three broadcast networks (such as ABC, NBC and CBS), Fox, The CW and PBS in most markets) and over 30 OTT-originated services, as well as a cloud-based DVR.
The service, which caters to cord cutters, is only available in the contiguous United States and can be streamed through smart TVs, digital media devices, its dedicated website, and mobile app. The World Series and NBA Finals have YouTube TV as their broadcast partner since 2017. YouTube TV has more than five million users as of July 2022.
On April 24, 2017, YouTube TV debuted in five significant U.S. markets: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. YouTube TV provides cable-originated channels owned by the corporate parents of the four major networks as well as other media companies in addition to carrying national broadcast networks. Other channels initially available on the service included CNBC, MSNBC, BBC World News, Smithsonian Channel (a venture of Showtime Networks and the Smithsonian Institution), Sundance TV (owned by AMC Networks), numerous sports channels, Disney Channel (owned by The Walt Disney Company), and BBC America (jointly owned by AMC Networks and BBC Studios).
YouTube TV members also received access to YouTube Premium’s original movies and series, though an additional subscription to Premium was required for customers to access ad-free content and additional app features; Showtime and Fox Soccer Plus were also purchasable as optional premium add-ons for an extra fee. Additionally in 2017, YouTube added MLB Network and signed agreements with two Major League Soccer teams, Seattle Sounders FC and Los Angeles FC, for regional streaming rights.
The cable networks of Turner Broadcasting System, controlled by Time Warner, started airing on YouTube TV in February 2018. (including, among others, TBS, TNT, CNN and Cartoon Network). Additionally, a deal to include MLB Network and NBA TV was also revealed by YouTube TV. In March 2018, the program increased its monthly cost for the first time, from $34.99 to $39.99, without providing any grandfathering or opt-out options. According to a deal with Lionsgate, YouTube TV started providing Starz as a premium add-on on June 19, 2018, with linear feeds of the six Starz and eight Starz Encore networks.
By January 2019, the service had grown to include 98% of American households. In Glendive, Montana, YouTube TV debuted in March 2019, expanding the service’s availability to all 210 television areas in the United States. On April 10, 2019, nine networks controlled by Discovery, Inc. were added to YouTube TV, bringing the total number of channels available to 70. These networks include Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Animal Planet, and OWN. Concurrently, the service revealed a second monthly price increase, from $39.99 to $49.99, without providing existing customers with a grandfather clause or an opt-out option. In order to give its Epix (now MGM+) premium service as an add-on, YouTube TV and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer reached an agreement on April 12 of that year.
In July 2019, at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Pasadena, California, YouTube TV announced it had signed a multi-year deal with PBS to allow carriage of live streams of the public broadcaster’s member stations and PBS Kids Channel beginning as early as the fourth quarter of 2019. The first PBS affiliate channels were added to YouTube TV on December 15, 2019. WarnerMedia (now Warner Bros. Discovery) and YouTube TV came to an agreement on February 20 that would enable YouTube TV to carry HBO and Cinemax as add-ons and grant subscribers access to the HBO Max streaming service, which was introduced on May 20 of that same year. (Users with HBO add-on subscriptions can view content in the HBO Max app using their YouTube TV/Google account login information.) YouTube TV became the first American vMVPD service to offer all five big premium channels as add-ons when HBO and Cinemax were included.
In May 2020, YouTube TV and ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global) struck an expanded, multi-year agreement to add the latter’s major cable networks, including MTV, Nickelodeon, BET, and Comedy Central, which had been conspicuously missing since the streamer’s debut. The agreement also included an extended collaboration to disseminate the media company’s content on the wider YouTube platforms, as well as a continued commitment to broadcast several other ViacomCBS-owned networks, including Showtime, through YouTube TV. On June 30, eight more stations were added, bringing the total number of channels available on YouTube TV to over 85. The third monthly price increase for the service—from $49.99 to $64.99—came along with the addition of the additional channels, and neither grandfathering nor opt-out clauses were included. Over time, some of its rivals, including Hulu + Live TV and FuboTV, have also instituted comparable price increases.
In September 2020, YouTube TV revealed the launch of a Sports Plus add-on package, which for a fee includes premium sports networks like NFL RedZone, MavTV, GolTV, Fox Soccer Plus, Stadium, and TVG. YouTube TV also announced the addition of the NFL Network to its base lineup. YouTube TV stated on December 1st, 2020, that starting in January 2021, Nexstar Media Group’s NewsNation (the former WGN America) would be carried. Seven additional ViacomCBS networks (including MTV2, TeenNick, Nick Jr., Dabl, and BET Her) that were not included in the May 7 renewal deal would be added to the lineup, according to a March 16 announcement from YouTube TV.
The HBO Max, Showtime, and Starz premium add-ons are included in the “Entertainment Plus” add-on, which the service debuted in February 2021. This extra discount package costs $29.99 per month. BeIN Sports, Outside TV, VSiN, and a number of other specialty sports networks will be added to YouTube TV’s Sports Plus add-on tier starting on September 8 in 2021, according to an announcement made on September 2, 2021.
In September 2022, YouTube TV began allowing subscribers the option of purchasing its premium add-ons without requiring signing up for the 85-channel base plan (a concept similar to the streaming channel stores operated by Apple, Prime Video and Roku), with around 20 add-ons initially being made available for purchase à la carte, including HBO Max; Cinemax; Showtime; Starz; Epix; Hallmark Movies Now; CuriosityStream; MLB.tv and NBA League Pass. On November 1 of that year, YouTube introduced Primetime Channels, a standalone channel shop, to the platform’s Movies & TV hub.
Beginning with the 2023 NFL season, YouTube TV was designated as the sole distributor of NFL Sunday Ticket in December 2022. Previously offered by DirecTV for 29 years, starting in 1994, the service is now provided by YouTube TV. According to CNBC, this is good news for both conventional television networks and YouTube TV.
Neal Mohan, chief product officer at YouTube, said that given how people consume sports material, this was a logical progression and that subscriptions would play a significant role in the service’s future. According to him, “creators would have exclusive access to games, everything from the first game all the way through the Super Bowl, so they can produce content for the NFL channel as well as their own YouTube shorts.” The NFL Network and RedZone on YouTube would not be impacted at the time of the statement.
