The Baltimore Sun, originally known as The Sun founded on May 17, 1837, is Maryland’s largest daily newspaper that covers local and regional news, issues, events, industries & people. The publication is currently owned by Tribune Publishing. The paper was founded by Arunah Shepherdson Abell (A. S. Abell) and his associates William Moseley Swain and Azariah H. Simmons. The Sun was owned by the Abell family until 1910 when local families Black and Garrett invested in the paper at the recommendation of former publisher of The News, founded in 1853 by Charles H. Grasty. Mr. Grasty held a controlling interest in the publication.
The Sun’s first foreign office was opened in London in 1924. Four additional foreign offices were added between 1955-1961. Bonn, West Germany was added in February 1955 and was later moved to Berlin. In January of 1956, a bureau was opened in Moscow making it one of the first US publication to achieve this. An office in Rome, Italy was created in July 1957 and another in New Delhi, India in 1961. In 1983, The Sun ran a total of 8 bureaus overseas and exclaimed “The Sun never sets on the world.”
Reg Murphy, a business executive and publisher from Gainesville, GA, bought The Sun in 1981 and sold it to the Times-Mirror Company, owner of the Los Angeles Times, in 1986. In 2000, the Times-Mirror company was bought by Chicago’s Tribune Company, transferring The Sun to Tribune Publishing. At this point, The Sun was now named The Baltimore Sun. Between 1995 to 2008, the newspaper’s foreign bureaus were all closed. The Baltimore Sun is the most popular part of the Baltimore Sun Media Group (BSMG), which includes the b free daily newspaper and 30 other community papers across the Baltimore Metro area.
In 2014, the BSMG stated they would purchase the City Paper, a weekly publication, and Landmark Media Enterprises, publications of Maryland. In 2021, the Baltimore Sun was sold to the Sunlight For All Institute, a non-profit backed by Stewart W. Bainum Jr. which was approved by Tribune shareholders. In 2022, the editorial board published an apology for its racism over its history of 185 years.
