Ooma, Inc. is a Silicon Valley, California-based American telecommunications business that is publicly traded. Ooma provides voice over IP (VoIP) calling services for mobile, home, and corporate users. In 2004, Andrew Frame, a former employee of Cisco Systems, created Ooma. The original Ooma product was a “VoIP in a box” gadget that used peer-to-peer VoIP technology to enable users to make calls over the landline lines of other Ooma users. A “hub” linked to the main phone line and “scouts” connected to other phones were how the system operated. Ooma stopped using peer-to-peer networking in January 2008.
For the Ooma Hub, PC Magazine gave Ooma the 2007 DigitalLife Best of Show award in the hardware innovator area. In 2009, Frame retired from his position as CEO, and Eric Stang took over. In the same year, Ooma unveiled its Telo system, which included a base unit for caller ID and limitless calling. The Ooma Telo and the Ooma Telo handset were created by Ooma, who received an honor for Internet Telephony Product of the Year in 2009. The Ooma Hub and Ooma Scout won Ooma the TMC Labs Innovation Award in the same year. In 2011, Ooma won the gold Best in Business Award for Consumer Product of the Year. Ooma’s VoIP-In-A-Box service was reported to be expanding to Canada in 2011.
In November 2012, Ooma debuted its HD2 mobile device. The phone’s functions include an intercom, one-touch voicemail, and baby tracking. In addition, Ooma introduced Ooma Linx in 2012, which connected any phone or fax machine to the Telo base station using an AC socket. For creating the Linx, HD2 handset, and Telo, Ooma won the Internet Telephony Product of the Year honor in December 2012. In December 2017 and January 2019, respectively, Ooma introduced the HD3 smartphone and the Ooma Telo 4G system with wireless internet access.
In June 2014, Ooma collaborated with West Valley City, Utah, to provide complimentary home phone service via a fiber network. Ooma was recognized as one of the fastest-growing private businesses in 2015 by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times. It received a gold award from the Best of Business Awards the same year.
In addition to Broadsmart, Ooma also purchased Butterfleye, a security camera startup, in December 2017, and Voxter, a custom business communications provider, in March 2018. We regret to notify you that Ooma Butterfleye and Smart Cam security cameras will no longer be operated, maintained, or supported, as stated in an email message sent to users on September 22, 2021. As a result, your camera(s) will cease to function on October 22, 2021. Your camera(s) will no longer function and capture videos after this date. Videos that you presently watch on the Smart Cam App won’t be available anymore.
The launch date of Ooma Telo is October 1, 2009. Telo is equipped with Bluetooth integration, HD voice, and a cordless DECT 6.0 handset and is made to offer limitless, free VoIP conversations within the United States. Customers who currently use a landline, cable- or DSL-based VoIP service, or a mobile service may port their number to Ooma as long as it is accessible and portable.
Users who purchase the premier plan receive enhanced voicemail, Multi-Ring, and Do Not Disturb. Additionally, users will get Caller ID with Name, which was dropped from the basic plan after the Ooma Telo was introduced. Additionally, Ooma Premier gives users with Google Voice profiles access to Google Voice extensions. (Ooma Telo only).
Customers of Ooma Basic pay monthly taxes and regulatory recovery fees (which differ depending on location), and they also receive unlimited domestic and international calling, inexpensive international calling, free Ooma-to-Ooma calling, basic voicemail, basic caller ID, call waiting, and E911 service.
Ooma Office, which was introduced in 2013, is a cloud-based phone system with corporate features like extension dialing, virtual fax extensions, and conferencing. The Ooma Office smartphone app was introduced in August 2016. The base station device that Ooma Office uses to function is not necessary for the mobile version. A virtual receptionist, call transferring, local and toll-free lines, conference bridges, and extension dialing are features offered by the mobile app. The Ooma Office Partner Program was introduced in 2016.
A base station and adapter that offers a wireless internet connection, Ooma Connect was launched in 2020. Connect can be used as a main source of internet access in places where wired internet service is expensive or unreliable, or as a backup to ensure business continuity during internet outages. Additionally, Ooma unveiled Ooma Managed Wi-Fi, which offers businesses an enterprise-grade Wi-Fi solution at a more reasonable price point and includes managed services to simplify installation, ongoing monitoring, and management.
Ooma Office Pro, which was introduced in 2019, offers all the functionality of Ooma Office in addition to more sophisticated features like video meetings, call recording, a desktop application (also referred to as a softphone), robocall blocking, and message transcription. Ooma Enterprise, which was introduced in 2018, offers a comprehensive, adaptable unified communications as a service (UCaaS) option.
