A $10 million fund for mobile gaming was revealed by Kongregate at the beginning of 2013, and Pany Haritatos, a former Zynga executive, was hired to run it. As part of the agreement, a shift in emphasis from hosting games from third parties to spearheading game creation was planned. “We’ll be increasing our spending across a range of sectors, from platform engineering to marketing/marketing technology. According to CEO Emily Greer, we’re also going to engage in first-party game development and possible in-house game acquisitions.
The creator of Animation Throwdown, Chicago-based Synapse Games, was purchased by Kongregate on October 5, 2017. Kongregate confirmed the departure of co-founder and CEO Emily Greer on May 2, 2019. As acting CEO, COO Pany Haritatos took her position. A free-to-play internet game called Surviv.io was purchased by Kongregate in December 2019.
As it prepared for Adobe Flash Player’s end-of-life on December 31, 2020, when the program necessary to operate the majority of its games would be disabled in some browsers, Kongregate announced on July 1, 2020, the suspension of submissions. While the Kongregate team labored to convert their internal titles to HTML5, other website features like the forums were also put on hold.
