About Instagram

Instagram is a social media platform for exchanging pictures and videos that is run by the American business Meta Platforms. Users of the app can submit media that can be edited with filters, arranged by hashtags, and categorized by location. Public or pre-approved users may share posts. Users can view trending content, like pictures, follow other users to add their content to a personal feed, and explore other users’ content by tag and location. When Instagram first launched, it set itself apart by restricting content framing to a square (1:1) aspect ratio of 640 pixels, which matched the breadth of the iPhone’s display at the time. This limitation was loosened in 2015 with the rise to 1080 pixels. Additionally, it added messaging capabilities, the ability to post multiple images or videos, and a feature called Stories that was similar to Snapchat’s primary rival and let users post content to a feed that was sequential and viewable by others for a 24-hour period. In January 2019, 500 million people everyday used Stories. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger first introduced Instagram for iOS in October 2010. The app quickly garnered traction, registering one million users in just two months, 10 million in a year, and one billion by June 2018. For about $1 billion in cash and stock in April 2012, Facebook Inc. purchased the business. The Android version was launched in April 2012, and then in November 2012, a feature-limited PC interface, in June 2014, a Fire OS app, and in October 2016, a Windows 10 app. Over 40 billion photos had been shared as of October 2015. Although Instagram is frequently praised for its popularity and impact, it has also come under fire for its alleged censorship, policy changes, changes to the user interface, and user-uploaded offensive and illegal content. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger’s smartphone check-in app Burbn served as the basis for Instagram’s early stages of development in San Francisco. They refocused their app on photo-sharing, which had grown to be a popular feature among its users, after realizing it was too identical to Foursquare. They gave it a new name: Instagram, a combination of the words “instant camera” and “telegram”. Users have the option to post pictures and quick videos, subscribe to other users’ streams, and geotag pictures with specific locations. Users have the option to make their accounts “private,” which forces them to manually accept any new follower requests. Users can share uploaded images to other social networking sites by linking their Instagram accounts to those platforms. New and live filters, immediate tilt-shift, high-resolution images, optional borders, one-click rotation, and an updated icon were all features of the app’s September 2011 update. Initially, photos could only have a square, 1:1 aspect ratio; however, as of August 2015, the app also allows portrait and widescreen aspect ratios. Previously, users could examine a map of a user’s geotagged images. In September 2016, the function was discontinued due to low usage. Posts can now be “saved” into a private section of the program as of December 2016. Users can now arrange saved posts into named collections thanks to an update to the feature released in April 2017. In order to hide their posts from the general public and other users, users can also “archive” them in a secure location. The action was seen as a way to restrict “emergent behavior” of users deleting photos, which deprives the service of content, as well as a way to stop users from deleting photos that don’t receive the desired number of “likes” or are considered boring. Instagram announced in August that it would begin grouping comments into threads so that users could engage with responses more easily. Since February 2017, a post can contain up to ten images or videos, with the content displayed as a swipeable slideshow. Originally only supporting square-format photos, the functionality was updated in August to support both portrait and landscape photography. Focus mode, which Instagram introduced in April 2018 as its take on portrait mode, softly blurs the background of a picture or video while keeping the subject in focus when it is selected. In November, Instagram started to enable the addition of descriptions for visually impaired users in the form of Alt text. Either the uploader directly specifies them or they are automatically generated using object recognition (using Facebook’s current technology). Instagram introduced a new feature called Instagram Live “Rooms” Let Four People Go Live Together on March 1, 2021. Instagram revealed a new accessibility feature in May 2021 that will enable creators to add closed captions to their videos on Instagram Reels and Stories. Instagram introduced a new function named “Co-Watching” in March 2020. Users can now exchange posts over video calls thanks to the new feature. Instagram claims that they accelerated the release of Co-Watching to address the demand for digitally connecting with friends and family as a result of social isolation brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the launch of a new feature dubbed “Reels” in August 2020, Instagram started to shift its focus to video. The goal was to outdo the video-sharing platform TikTok. In August 2020, Instagram incorporated suggested posts as well. Instagram shows users posts relevant to their hobbies from accounts they don’t follow after they’ve scrolled through the last 48 hours of posts. Zuckerberg announced intentions to integrate non-fungible tokens (NFTs) into the platform on March 17, 2022.
