The company, formerly known as Fortis, Inc., was spun off from Dutch and Belgian financial services group Fortis Insurance N.V. in 2004. Sun Life Financial agreed in September 2015 to purchase Assurant Employee Benefits for $940 million, and the transaction was completed in March 2016.
Assurant’s basic renters insurance policy includes not only the expected items, but also a few that most insurers do not.
