The Boston Globe is a daily newspaper published in the United States, with its headquarters in Boston. The publication has taken home 27 Pulitzer Prizes in total. As of June 2022, its estimated daily circulation had decreased to fewer than 69,000 copies. In 2017, it reported having 300,000 paper and digital subscribers. The Boston Globe is Boston’s biggest and oldest daily newspaper.
The newspaper was established in 1872 and was primarily governed by Irish Catholic interests before being purchased by Charles H. Taylor and his family. It was personally owned until 1973, when it was sold to The New York Times for $1.1 billion, making it one of the most expensive print acquisitions in American history. The New York Times Company sold the newspaper to Boston Red Sox and Liverpool owner John W. Henry for $70 million in 2013, after it had lost more than 90% of its worth in 20 years.
One of the most renowned papers in the country has said of the newspaper. The Boston Globe was the first significant newspaper in the United States to oppose the Vietnam War in 1967. The American drama film Spotlight, which was released in 2015, was based on the newspaper’s 2002 coverage of the Roman Catholic Church sex abuse scandal, which attracted attention from the worldwide media. Nancy Barnes was appointed editor of The Boston Globe in February 2023. The Boston Herald, which has a lower circulation and is declining more quickly, is The Boston Globe’s main print rival.
Six Boston businessmen spent a total of $150,000 in the Boston Globe’s establishment in 1872, which would be $3,392,917 in 2021. Eben Dyer Jordan, owner of the Jordan Marsh department store, and Cyrus Wakefield, creator of the Wakefield Rattan Company and the town of Wakefield, Massachusetts, were among the founders. On March 4, 1872, the first issue was released and sold for four cents, which is equal to $0.9 today. Charles H. Taylor was recruited by Jordan in August 1873 as a temporary business manager. In December, Taylor signed a contract to become the paper’s general manager for a period of two years.
Until his passing in 1921, he was The Boston Globe’s first editor, and until 1999, four of his descendants served in that capacity. The Globe, originally a morning newspaper, started publishing on Sundays in 1877. The Boston Weekly Globe was a weekly version that was published from 1873 until 1892 when it was merged with the Sunday edition and catered to postal subscribers outside of the city. The Boston Evening Globe, an afternoon version of The Boston Globe that debuted in 1878 and was published until 1979, was founded. The Boston Globe had established itself as a bastion by the 1890s, with an editorial board predominated by Irish American Catholics.
In February 2013, The New York Times Company announced that it would sell its New England Media Group, which encompasses the Globe; bids were received by six parties, of them included John Gormally (then-owner of WGGB-TV in Springfield, Massachusetts), another group included members of former Globe publishers, the Taylor family, and Boston Red Sox principal owner John W. Henry, who bid for the paper through the New England Sports Network (majority owned by Fenway Sports Group alongside the Boston Bruins). However, after the NESN group pulled out of the running to buy the paper, Henry made his own separate bid to buy the Globe in July 2013.
On October 24, 2013, he purchased the Globe for $70 million and changed the company’s identity to Boston Globe Media. On January 30, 2014, Henry appointed Mike Sheehan, a well-known former Boston advertising executive, as CEO and himself as editor. Doug Franklin succeeded Mike Sheehan as CEO in January 2017. However, after serving in the role for six months, Franklin resigned in July 2017 due to disagreements with owner Henry.
The 815,000-square-foot Dorchester offices were sold to an unidentified buyer for an undisclosed sum in July 2016. In June 2017, The Globe relocated its printing business to Taunton, Massachusetts’s Myles Standish Industrial Park. The Globe relocated to Exchange Place in Boston’s Financial District in June 2017 as well. Brian McGrory would be replaced as editor by Nancy Barnes, the head of NPR news, according to a November 2022 Boston Globe announcement.
Each lead editorial in the Boston Globe was signed “Uncle Dudley” beginning with the Sunday version in 1891 and expanding to weekday editions in 1913. Editor Thomas Winship put a stop to this practice in 1966. When the Globe accidentally used the headline “Mush from the Wimp” during part of the press run of an editorial about a speech by President Jimmy Carter in March 1980, it garnered widespread notice.
As is frequently practiced in the news business, the editorial sections of the Globe have been distinct from the news operation since 1981. Editorials reflect The Boston Globe’s official point of view as a local institution. The publisher typically decides which candidates for high office to endorse and retains the right to veto an editorial.
In 1967, The Globe issued its first political endorsement, endorsing Kevin White for mayor of Boston. While occasionally endorsing Republicans in state and local elections, such as Charlie Baker for governor, The Globe has reliably backed Democratic presidential candidates, such as Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. In 2022, James Dao was appointed director of the editorial page.
