Sequestering content for their own, specialized video streaming services at the expense of content aggregators like Hulu and Netflix is one increasingly common tendency among traditional broadcast channels. One illustration of this is CBS All Access. The only way to watch US original series like Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, The Good Fight, and The Twilight Zone as they broadcast is on CBS All Access, which also hosts a sizable backlog of CBS shows. Local news programming and live sports streams are also included in the service. Although CBS All Access might not provide enough value to be required viewing for most viewers, it is probably affordable for fans of particular CBS programs.
With a CBS All Access membership, you can stream a ton of past and present programs from the vast CBS library as well as some live programming from CBS news channels. In addition, you can watch shows on BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, and Smithsonian Channel, which are all ViacomCBS networks. Even though most TV viewers should be able to find at least something entertaining to watch, passing this exam alone might not be sufficient to justify signing up for yet another monthly subscription. Remember that in March, CBS All Access will change its name to Paramount+. This action will significantly increase the library of streaming movies that are accessible on the service in addition to changing the name.
Dramas like NCIS (in all of its incarnations), Blue Bloods, and Elementary are among the programs available for on-demand viewing through CBS All Access. Watch 60 Minutes, CBS Evening News, or Meet the Nation if you like news. The Big Bang Theory, Man with a Plan, and Young Sheldon are a few comedic options. You can even view vintage programs like Frasier, the original episodes of Hawaii 5-0, and The Twilight Zone, as well as all the previous Star Trek series. There are also fresh episodes of CBS programs like FBI and Magnum P.I., which have been rebooted. Many (but not all) current shows make recent episodes and back catalogs available soon after they air.
Nickelodeon (Blue’s Clues, Drake and Josh, iCarly, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, Paw Patrol, and Spongebob Squarepants) and Comedy Central (Key and Peele, Nathan for You, Reno 911!, and numerous comedy specials) are probably the most well-known of the other channels on the service. The Smithsonian channel adds nature and documentary material to the service, but fans of documentaries should turn to CuriosityStream instead, and the collection of BBC Planet Earth programs on Discovery+ is unmatched.
CBS All Access falls short in this area, unlike many other video streaming services that stake their reputations on the caliber of their original material. Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, The Good Fight, and The Twilight Zone are some of its best programs. Coyote, No Activity, Strange Angel, Tell Me a Tale, and The Stand are examples of additional originals. Future originals include The Man Who Fell to Earth and Star Trek: Mysterious New Worlds. Less the quality of the programs than the quantity is the problem with CBS’s original programming.
Through its live TV feature, CBS All Access does provide some sports material, but this is noticeably less than most of the other contenders in the list of the top sports streaming services. You can view live NFL games that are broadcast on CBS in your area, the NCAA March Madness Tournament, some PGA Tour events, and SEC Football, for example. The top-tier features of rival services, like DVR capabilities and the ability to resume streams from the start of the show, are absent from CBS All Access. You can view additional football games with other options in the roundup of the best NFL streaming services.
Visit fuboTV if sports are what you want to view the most. This premium service offers excellent DVR capabilities along with more than 90 channels of domestic and foreign sports programming, including CBS Sports. Both YouTube TV and Hulu are excellent choices for streaming sports, and both have extensive channel lineups that include all of the main US sports leagues.
The $9.99/month, commercial-free edition of CBS All Access is required in order to remove them from the $5.99/month base plan. This more expensive tier does not shield you from live TV ads or eliminate the so-called promotional messaging that goes along with some programming. You can, however, download movies for offline watching. The impact of the switch to Paramount+ on these rates is still unknown. The yearly plan for CBS All Access lessens the financial burden a little. The commercial-free option costs $99.99 annually compared to the limited-commercial plan’s $59.99. Remember that you must first cancel your existing subscription in order to change from an annual plan to a monthly one.
A Showtime add-on is also available for purchase, which contains all of the television and film content from that company’s own streaming service. But at the moment, this is the only add-on choice, and it only works with monthly subscription options. CBS All Access and the Showtime Add-On cost $14.99 per month for the limited commercial package. The monthly cost of the commercial-free edition is a hefty $18.99. Showtime alone costs $10.99 per month, so the combined package provides a small monthly savings. Amazon Prime Video costs $8.99 per month, while Netflix has a starting price of $8.99. The monthly fee for Hulu’s ad-supported option is just $5.99. The monthly prices for HBO Max and Starz are $14.99 and $8.99, respectively. Apple TV+ is only $4.99 per month compared to Disney+’s $6.99 monthly fee.
On desktop computers, CBS All Access runs in a web browser. Windows 10 also has a separate CBS app. In addition to Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV devices, it provides applications for both Android and iOS. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 devices are additionally supported by CBS All Access. Using a free press account on a Windows 10 computer and a Google Pixel 3 operating Android 11, I evaluated the experience.
